Before you start
- Do these on a computer, logged in to Squarespace. Your site is on Squarespace version 7.1, which is what these steps are for.
- Squarespace sometimes moves its menus around. Each step links to Squarespace's own help page, so if something isn't where this says, the link will show you where it went.
- Nothing here can break your site. If something looks wrong after you save, change it back.
This week: an afternoon between you
It shows "(555) 555-555" and "Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm", left over from the Squarespace template. Everyone who scans a truck sees them.
- Open the Pages panel. Find the page whose web address ends in /truckqr. It may be titled "Contact", and it may sit under Not linked. Hover over a page and click the gear icon to see its address.
- Open the page and click Edit.
- Click the text (555) 555-555 and change it to 0438 131 677.
- Change Monday–Friday 10am–6pm to your real hours. Your contact page says Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm.
- While you're there, check anything else on the page that came with the template, like the "Instagram / Tiktok" line.
- Click Save.
Check it worked: scan the QR code on one of the trucks with your phone.
They're in the footer on every page and both lead to "page not found".
- On any page, hover over the footer at the bottom and click Edit. (Squarespace help: editing your footer)
- Click the text with Shop, Our Story, Get in Touch, Gallery, and delete Shop and Gallery.
- Click Save. The footer is shared, so this fixes every page at once.
Check it worked: click each link left in the footer.
Google still shows 0449 170 273 from an older version of your site. Google trusts a business more when its number is the same everywhere.
- Search 0449 170 273 on Google in a private window, and note every place it appears.
- If it's not your number any more, update it wherever you can log in: Facebook, any directories (Yellow Pages, True Local and so on).
- If it is still yours, decide which number is the main one, and use that one everywhere.
The old copy of your website in Google fades out by itself over time. Step 11 speeds that up.
Squarespace builds a hidden block of business details for Google. Yours is there but empty. These settings are the most likely place it gets them from.
- Open Settings, then Business Information. Squarespace's help lists it as Settings, then Selling, then Business Information. (Squarespace help: Business Information)
- Phone: 0438 131 677. Email: your business email.
- Location: your business address. Depending on your template, Squarespace may show this on the site. If you'd rather not show your home address, save it, then look at your site and decide.
- Business hours: the same as your Google Business Profile and contact page.
- Click Save.
Check it worked: go to validator.schema.org, paste https://www.adelaidewatersupplier.com.au, and click Run test. Look for LocalBusiness. Your name, phone and hours should now be in it. If they're still empty, tell Brendan.
Google reads the main heading (called "Heading 1") to understand what a page is about. Each page should have exactly one, saying the job and the place.
- Open a page and click Edit.
- Click into the heading text and highlight it. If the page has no heading, add a text block near the top and type one in.
- In the text toolbar, open the Format dropdown and choose Heading 1. (Squarespace help: formatting text)
- Any other text on that page set to Heading 1: change it to Heading 2. It will look a little smaller.
- Click Save, and do the next page.
Suggested main headings. Use your own words if you prefer, as long as each says the job and the place:
| Page | Main heading (Heading 1) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Water cartage for Adelaide and the Hills | Keep "Fast. Clean. Reliable. Water." as your slogan, set to Heading 2. |
| Services | Water delivery and water cart hire | |
| Residential Water | Water delivered to your tank, pool or dam | Has no main heading at the moment. |
| Civil Hire | Water carts for your site | The scrolling "Enquire Today" banner counts as three main headings. Change its text style to a smaller one if Squarespace offers it (help: scrolling blocks), or replace it with a plain button. |
| Our Story | A family water business from St Agnes | Has no main heading at the moment. |
| Get in Touch | Order water or a water cart | Has no main heading at the moment. |
The title is the blue link in Google, and the description is the text under it. Some of yours repeat themselves, like "Get in Touch | Get in Touch Today". Squarespace adds your business name to the end of each title by itself, so the titles below are short on purpose.
- Open the Pages panel, hover over a page, and click the gear icon.
- Click the SEO tab. Paste the title into SEO Title and the description into SEO Description. Click Save. (Squarespace help: SEO descriptions)
- For the home page: open the SEO panel, click SEO Settings, then in Search appearance click the Home tab, and set the home description there.
| Page | SEO title | SEO description |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Water Cartage Adelaide & the Hills | Adelaide Water Supplier | Family owned water cartage from St Agnes. Drinking water for tanks, pools, stock and dams, and water cart hire for civil sites. Call 0438 131 677. |

| Civil Hire | Water Cart Hire Adelaide | Dry hire water carts from 8,000 to 14,000 litres, 2,000 litre trailers and a 13 tonne tipper, for dust suppression, compaction and events. |

The home page's own title is set separately. If it still reads "Adelaide Water Supplier | Water Cartage & Bulk Water Delivery in Adelaide", it's fine as it is, just a little long. (help: title formats)
Google can't see a photo. A short description (called alt text) tells it what's there, and screen readers read it aloud for people who can't see it.
- Open a page, click Edit, and click a photo.
- Click the Content tab, then type into Image alt text. It saves by itself. (Squarespace help: alt text)
Say what's actually in the photo, plainly. For example: Our 14,000 litre water cart with yellow safety railings or Our truck filling a rainwater tank, hose run up a ladder. Don't stuff it with search words.
The habit that matters most
The map spots in our searches went to businesses with 10 to 28 reviews. You have 5, all five stars. This is the gap you can close fastest.
- Signed in to Google, open your Business Profile, choose Read reviews, then Get more reviews, then Copy. That's your review link. (Google help: getting more reviews)
- Save it on both your phones so it's quick to send.
- After each delivery, send it by text. Something like:
Thanks for having us today. If you've got a minute, a Google review really helps a small family business like ours: [your link]
John and Jenna, Adelaide Water Supplier
Google's rules, worth sticking to:
- Ask everyone, not just the customers you think are happy.
- Never offer a discount or anything else for a review. Google treats that as a fake review.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, in your own words.
Google can also make a QR code for your review link. It could go on a docket or invoice, or a card left in the letterbox.
It's already set up with the right number. A fuller profile gives Google more reasons to show it.
- Signed in to Google, search my business, open your profile, and choose to edit it.
- Service areas: add the areas you cover: the north east, east, Adelaide Hills, north, Adelaide Plains and Barossa Valley, as the suburbs and areas Google offers.
- Description: say what you do and where, in plain words. If the SA Health listing is yours, say so.
- Photos: add your trucks, the trailers and a few jobs. Add a new one every month or so.
- Hours: check they match your site exactly.
This month: new pages
This is how you get into the searches you're missing. Every business that came up in our searches had a page for the exact thing searched. Start with these three:
| New page | SEO title | SEO description |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency water | Emergency Water Delivery Adelaide | Tank run dry? Out of hours and emergency water from a local family water carter. Ring 0438 131 677 and tell us what you need. |
| Pool water | Pool Water Delivery Adelaide | Filling a new pool or topping one up? Bulk water by the truckload, at least 9,000 litres a load. Call 0438 131 677. |
| Stock and dams | Water for Stock and Dams | Bulk water for livestock and dams on farms and rural properties across the Hills, the Plains and the Barossa. Call 0438 131 677. |
What goes on each page:
- One main heading saying the job and the place, like "Pool water delivery in Adelaide".
- Straight under it, two or three sentences and your phone number as a button. Someone with an empty tank should be able to ring without scrolling.
- What's involved, in your own words: the smallest load, how far the hose reaches, how many loads a typical pool takes, what you need to know when they ring.
- Three or four questions people ask you on the phone, with your answers.
- A short story from a real job: where it was, what they needed, how you sorted it. Ask the customer first if you name the place or show their house.
- A photo from that kind of job, described as in step 7.
- The SEO title and description from the table above.
For examples, look at the emergency, pool and stock and dams pages on the example site. Write each page fresh rather than copying one and changing a few words. Google treats near-copies as one page.
To add a page: in the Pages panel click + and choose a blank page. Then link it from your Services page and your menu.
Do the same for Residential Water and Civil Hire. Your Our Story page already tells a story well. Give those two pages the same treatment: what the job involves, the questions people ask, and a real job you've done.
Addresses from your earlier website still turn up in Google and lead to "page not found". A redirect sends those visitors, and Google, to the right page instead.
- Open the Developer tools panel and click URL mappings. (Squarespace help: URL mappings)
- Add one line for each old address, in this exact format, and click Save:
/services/residential-water-delivery -> /residential 301
That's the one old address we found. If you know of others from the old site, add a line for each, pointing to the closest page you have now.
Someone whose tank has run dry wants to know two things: are you open, and should they ring or fill in the form.
Near the top of Get in Touch, add your hours and one line like: Tank run dry? Ring us on 0438 131 677 rather than using the form. Out of hours and emergency water is available.
Ongoing, and later
Your own photos are the thing competitors can't copy. The gaps right now:
- A truck filling a pool.
- A delivery on a farm: a stock tank, a trough or a dam.
- A tight Hills driveway, or a long hose run.
- A cart working on a civil site.
Landscape, in daylight, with the truck and the job both in shot. Ask the customer first if their house or face is in it.
A page for the Adelaide Hills, the Barossa and the Adelaide Plains could win searches like "water cartage Barossa". But only with something true to say about each one: the access, the kind of properties, the jobs you do there, with a photo from a job there.
Don't copy one page and swap the name, which is what 24/7 did. It may work for a while, but Google is built to see through it. Three honest pages beat thirty copies.
How you'll know it's working
- In two or three months, run the same searches in a private window and see where you are.
- Ask new customers how they found you, and keep a tally.
- Watch your review count climb on your Business Profile.
Google takes weeks to notice changes, sometimes longer. Don't judge it after a week.
